Vipiteno, multicultural soul of modern Middle Ages
Vipiteno is the most important and lively tourist resort in Alta Valle Isarco: a small city merging medieval atmosphere and modern comfort, Tyrolean tradition and Mediterranean influences.
Listed among the 'Most Beautiful Villages of Italy', Sterzing is a town with multicultural charm, with its alleys, inns, shops and markets revealing all its commercial soul. The main monuments, castles and museums of the city are an important attraction: for example Torre delle Dodici, the tower which is the symbol of the city and which divides Old and New City, the Municipal Museum and the Multscher Museum in the former hospice of the German Order, the late-gothic town hall, the Church of the Holy Ghost and the parish church "Nostra Signora della Palude". Unfar from Vipiteno, the valley is overlooked by two castles: Castel Tasso and Castel Pietra, whereas Campo di Trens is overlooked by the Shrine Maria Trens, one of the most important sites of piligrimage in South Tyrol.
The city boasts an important cultural tradition, which can be fully enjoyed during the numerous gastronomic events, such as the Knödel festival, the Fine cuisine festival and the Lantern nights. These are perfect occasions to discover the city with all its colors and to taste different local dishes, without forgetting the Christmas market, one of the most important events animating the city.
What to do in summer and winter
The beauty of the city harmoniously complements that of the landscape, and the surrounding valleys offer endless possibilities for hiking and mountaineering enthusiasts. For sports enthusiasts, the area of Sterzing, Val di Vizze and Campo di Trens in South Tyrol offers countless activities all year round.
In fact Valle di Vizze, with its unpolluted nature, glaciers and imposing peaks over three thousand meters, offers many walking paths and climbing routes. Not to be missed is the 550 m long 'Ölberg' via ferrata in Avenes with difficulty B/D and the ascent to the Gran Pilastro Hut. If in winter the valley is a cross-country skiing paradise, in summer it is traversed by a section of the Tyrolean High Route.
If you prefer easier walks, there are many paths reaching the huts. You can also have a hike to Monte Cavallo, overlooking all the surrounding landscape. Vipiteno also offers many mountain bike tours, nordic walking paths, a wonderful golf course as well as the opportunity of doing rafting on the Isarco river.
Only five minutes away from the center you will find the cableway leading to the Monte Cavallo - Vipiteno ski area, boasting an incredible view over the surrounding valleys and peaks. Winter-sport lovers will appreciate the well-kept and sunny slopes, the snow-guarantee and the vast choice of activities. On Monte Cavallo, there is Italy's longest illuminated and snow-covered toboggan run (approx. 10 km), and for the past couple of years there has also been a 1,300 m long summer toboggan run with a difference in altitude of almost 300 metres up to the valley station of the lift.
