Val Gardena will host the 2031 edition of the Alpine Ski World Championships. In 2029, however, the event will be held in Narvik, Norway. The surprise was the decision by FIS President Johan Eliasch to let the delegates vote for a double allocation of the future rainbow events. For 2031, Val Gardena prevailed with 14 votes against 6 for Soldeu in Andorra.
During the congress in Reykjavik, Iceland, Val Gardena's candidature was also supported by the president of the autonomous province of Bolzano, Arno Kompatscher, and his deputy Daniel Alfreider.
The president of FISI, Flavio Roda, signed the contract with the FIS for the next Italian World Championships, which will be held 10 years after Cortina and five years after the 2026 Winter Olympics, live on television. This represents another success for Italy in winter sports, bringing another event of great international prestige to our Alps.
On stage, representing Val Gardena, was the president of the Gardena Organising Committee, Rainer Senoner, who, visibly moved, thanked the entire FIS family for this great recognition. The rainbow event will return to Val Gardena 61 years after the one in 1970.
