Year of Glaciers at MUSE and the Geological Museum of the Dolomites

25 March 2025

The year 2025 has been proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Year of Glacier Conservation, an initiative to raise public awareness of the importance of glaciers in the global climate and hydrological system. Their rapid melting, due to rising temperatures and pollution, represents one of the most urgent environmental challenges of our time. The shrinking of glaciers not only threatens biodiversity, but also affects the availability of fresh water, mountain habitats and key sectors such as tourism, agriculture and hydropower production.

Events at the MUSE in Trento

MUSE has organised an extensive programme of events to explore the topic of glacier conservation, including exhibitions, educational workshops, theme days, lectures on the results of scientific research, and performances to raise public awareness of the importance of these fragile ecosystems.

One of the main events is the exhibition Sebastião Salgado. Glaciers, an exhibition project born from the collaboration between the Trento Film Festival, the Mart and the MUSE. Curated by Lélia Wanick Salgado, Gabriele Lorenzoni (Mart) and Luca Scoz (MUSE), and realised in collaboration with Contrasto and Studio Salgado, the exhibition features a series of photographs, many of them previously unpublished, selected by the artist to narrate the beauty and fragility of glaciers around the world. In Rovereto and Trento, the exhibition takes place in two venues: at the Mart, with over 50 photographs in large and extra-large format, and at the MUSE, where a large site-specific installation, created in the spaces of the ‘Great Void’ designed by Renzo Piano, presents images taken in Canada, in Kluane Park. This exhibition reinforces the Trento Film Festival's commitment to environmental protection and is part of the 73rd edition of the event, which will be held in Trento from 25 April to 4 May.
