Sunday19 May 2024 is International Museum Day in the Province of Bolzano. International Museum Day was founded in 1977 on the initiative of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) with the aim of raising awareness of the social and cultural importance of museums. Museums are in fact places of confrontation, learning and experience of the culture of their territory. Since 1992, every year ICOM has identified a specific theme for the work and tasks of a museum.
Since 2005, South Tyrolean museums have also joined the initiative, which is supported and co-ordinated by the Museums Department of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano/Bozen. The participating museums offer free admission and an exclusive programme for all ages. Well over 100 events await visitors, including workshops, guided tours, exhibitions, demonstrations, games, concerts, quizzes, treasure hunts, theatrical performances, readings, music, experiments and much more.
The motto chosen by ICOM, the International Council of Museums, for this edition is 'Museums for Education and Research'. From 2020, the day aims to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, in the belief that museums can play a role in shaping a sustainable future, through mediation programmes, exhibitions, community involvement and research.
This year, in line with the motto, ICOM wants to focus on two Sustainable Development Goals:
- Goal 4 Quality Education: to provide equitable and inclusive quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all.
- Goal 9 Business, Innovation and Infrastructure: build a resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and foster innovation.
