Skiing in Val Comelico in the Dolomiti Superski
Snow, silence and nature: this is what you find in Comelico, the easternmost section of the province of Belluno, characterized by landscapes of uncontaminated nature. In winter this is a favorite destination for all snow lovers, eager to try the many sports and activities you can practice here: from skiing to snowshoeing, from ice climbing to trekking, from easy walks to ice skating.
Most ski slopes of the Val Comelico valley are in the area Padola - Monte Croce Pass, but you find some also in Santo Stefano di Cadore. The modern chairlift of Padola is the first in Italy with an intermediate station allowing you to ski at an altitude between 1500 and 2000 meters. Taking the chairlift, in only a few minutes you reach the 2000 meters of the upper station of Col d'la Tenda, where you find a bar-and-grill with a wide terrace. Here start many exciting ski runs of different difficulty levels, exposed to the sun since early morning. A snowmaking system guarantees always perfectly snow covered slopes. At the valley floor beginners have at their disposal a school camp with two ski lifts and a ski school with expert and professional instructors.
The cross-country skiing trails, included in the Dolomiti NordicSki, wind through wonderful landscapes: those of Valgrande and its uncontaminated nature, where you can ski in the silence and peace of forests. The trails, in the past used by champion Maurilio De Zolt for his training, range from easy to difficult levels and are suitable for both classic and skating technique. A floodlit trail allows nighttime skiing. Other trails connect the ski runs of the valley floor with those of the Monte Croce Pass, with the slopes of Spina up to Casammazzagno and with some of the local shepherd's huts.
On the surrounding valleys and peaks you can also practice ski mountaineering. There are in fact some fascinating routes on Monte Zovo, in the Val Visdende valley and starting from Danta: the perfect chance to admire the landscapes of the Val Comelico valley.
More than skiing
In the Val Comelico valley you can practice trekking and snowshoeing along the trails running near Padola, in Valgrande, through the picturesque Val Visdende valley and in Santo Stefano di Cadore. In Padola there is also a dog sledding school and a natural ice rink where you can rent ice skates. The rink is floodlit in the evenings to skate at the rhythm of the music and for figure skating shows. If you prefer to let others "lead the way", don't miss a tour on a troika or a horseback riding tour. If you are a bit more daring, in the Val Frison valley you can practice ice climbing with the local mountain guides.
