How to get to South Tyrol

South Tyrol is easy to reach. Here you will find all information on how to get to South Tyrol by car, motorbike, camper van, plane, train or bus. The region is well connected by road and rail. An efficient internal transport service makes it possible to reach all locations in the various valleys.

Getting there by car

The most convenient way to reach South Tyrol by car is certainly the A22 Brenner motorway, which runs entirely from north to south. For those arriving from the south, the recommended exits are: Egna/Ora; Bolzano south to reach Merano; Bolzano north to reach the holiday area of Val d'Ega; Chiusa/Val Gardena; Bressanone/Varna to reach Val Pusteria, the area of the Tre Cime in the Dolomites, Plan de Corones and Alta Badia; Vipiteno; Brennero.

Arriving from the west via the Reschen and Stilfserjoch passes (summer only). For those arriving from the east via Val di Landro from Cortina d'Ampezzo or Misurina and via the Monte Croce Pass from Sesto into the Three Peaks area of the Dolomites.

Getting there by train

The main railway network is the Verona-Trento-Brenner-Munich route. The main stations are Bolzano, Bressanone, Vipiteno and Brennero. There are two secondary lines: Bolzano-Merano-Val Venosta and Fortezza-Brunico-San Candido-Lienz (in Austria).

South Tyrol can be reached by Frecciargento trains from Verona, Florence, Bologna, Trento, Rome and Rovereto with 8 daily connections during the week and 10 at the weekend. Frecciabianca trains run from Milan, Turin, Venice, Udine and Trieste to Verona, where they connect to South Tyrol. DB/ÖBB trains also run along the Brenner Pass, connecting South Tyrol with Austria and Germany.

Getting there by plane

The nearest airports are Verona and Innsbruck. Nearby airports are Venice, Milan, Brescia, Treviso and Bergamo. In South Tyrol there is also a small airport in Bolzano, which is connected daily with Rome.

From the airports there are also private shuttle services, car hire or taxis that take you directly to South Tyrol. From Verona and Innsbruck there is a South Tyrol shuttle service with four daily connections; from Treviso and Venice from June to September and from December to March Cortina Express connects Treviso and Venice with Cortina, Alta Pusteria and Alta Badia with two daily trips seven days a week. From Bergamo and Milan Bus Group offers four daily connections every day. From Munich Bus Group, Airport Line and FlixBus connect Munich with South Tyrol every day.

Getting there by bus

In South Tyrol, the public transport service is operated by SAD, whose vehicles leave from Bolzano, opposite the train station. The regular FlixBus service connects Milan, Rome and Trento with South Tyrol every day. Alto Adige Transfer makes connections by appointment from the FlixBus stop to the various South Tyrolean destinations.
