The dinosaurs that once lived in the area that later gave rise to the Dolomites, have left traces of their passage in various areas.
One of these is located at the foot of Mount Pelmo, in Selva di Cadore in Val Fiorentina.
On a boulder, which emerged after a landslide of Mount Pelmo, the footprints of some dinosaurs are "printed" and tell us a curious story: once the Dolomites area was similar to today’s Bahamas Islands. We are in the upper Triassic, this is when we have the first news of the appearance of dinosaurs on earth.
The boulder can be reached on foot starting from Passo Staulanza, in the direction of Rifugio Venezia, with a walk of about 1.45h, following the path CAI 472.
A cast that reproduces the entire boulder with footprints is also on display at the Museo Vittorino Cazzetta in Selva di Cadore. Together with the boulder, some specimens of dinosaurs that left this type of footprints have been reconstructed.
