The National Park of the Dolomites of Friuli is the largest of the two parks of Friuli Venezia Giulia: covering a surface of 37,000 hectares, it is a real paradise for trekking and nature-oriented excursions; such activities are indeed possible thanks to a very rich net of paths.
The protected area extends form the province of Pordenone to that of Udine, including also Valcellina and the upper valley of river Tagliamento. The area is characterized by a high degree of "wilderness", given by the absence of connecting roads. The mountain chain of Monfalconi with its Campanile di Val Montanaia, the high meadows of "Campoross", the pastures of "malga Senos" and the solitude of Canale di Meduna, all contribute to making it a unique environment.
Connected to the park is the nearby Natural Preserve Forra del Cellina, a spectacular furrow digged by Stream Cellina in the limestone strata between Barcis and Montereale Valcellina, before its mouth on the upper plain of Friuli.
Quite remarkably, the Park can be visisted only with mountain equipment. Theme routes, accessible to everybody - disabled people included - and rather close to the towns, are alternated with more demanding routes, with rare signs or no signs at all, which thus still assure the traditional aspects of mountaineering, i.e. adventure and discovery.
