The Women's Museum is located in Merano and tells the story of women through fashion, clothes, accessories and everyday objects. The museum was founded by Evelyn Ortner and hosts temporary exhibitions on women throughout the year. There is also a specialised library.
The Women's Museum was founded thanks to the initiative of Evelyn Ortner, an Austrian collector of clothes and accessories who also founded the Women's Museum Association - women in the course of time, which still runs the museum today.
The Women's Museum tells the story of how the role of women has changed over time and how they have been emancipated in society. Everything revolves around fashion, the focus of the museum and the mirror of society; everyday objects; and the changes that have taken place over the centuries, such as the first female professions or the practice of sport.
In addition to the permanent exhibition on the upper floor of the building, the Women's Museum periodically hosts lectures and temporary exhibitions on the lower floors that focus on women, such as the one dedicated to corsets. There is also a well-stocked library with books on the world of women.
The museum, the only one of its kind in Italy, was until recently housed in a Poor Clare convent, but now has a new home in the building of the Banca Popolare in Merano.
The museum cooperates with national and international women's associations.
