The Ladin Museum is located in the medieval castle "Ciastel de Tor" in San Martino in Badia and is a true cultural bastion of the Ladin world. The numerous documents and objects on display in the museum highlight essential aspects and information on the history, language, archaeology, tourism and handicrafts of the Ladin Dolomite valleys. Various cultural events are also held in the courtyard and in the special rooms of the castle: temporary exhibitions, concerts and seminars.
The Ladins are an ethnic group of more than 30,000 people, who feel and proudly affirm their identity, trying to preserve it from the constant changes of the modern world. In particular, it is the language (Ladin) that represents a large part of this identity and the cohesive force between the different Ladin communities.
The itinerary in the Ladin Museum Ciastel de Tor takes us through various important historical stages, starting with the colonisation of the Dolomites by Stone Age hunters following the melting of the ice: information is thus provided on the first settlements during the Bronze Age or artefacts from the Iron Age, such as the small stone stele with an inscription (the oldest document found in the Ladin valleys).
In the Ladin Museum Ciastel de Tor in San Martino there are also sections dedicated to geology (the birth and discovery of the Dolomites, thanks to the French naturalist Dèodat de Dolomieu, and the fossil remains found there), tourism and economy (the particular settlements in Val Badia, the viles, and the iron road) and handicrafts.
With the same admission ticket to the Ladin Museum Ciastel de Tor you can visit the Museum Ladin Ursus ladinicus in San Cassiano: here you will find unique finds and the full skeleton of the historical bear of the Dolomites.
