Inaugurated in Trento in July 2013, MUSE, the new science museum, is dedicated to science and technology, to the relationship between man and nature and, through its exhibition itinerary, seeks to retrace the relationships, not always happy, between man and the environment. Designed by Renzo Piano, it is a modern, environmentally friendly structure with a wide range of interactive features that will provide an exciting experience for young and old alike.
The new MUSE, Trento's Science Museum, covers an area of 19,000 m2 to the west of Trento's historic centre. An old industrial area which, thanks to an investment by the Autonomous Province of Trento and the intervention of one of the world's best architects, Renzo Piano, has become a first-class cultural centre.
The MUSE is dedicated to science and technology that act and influence nature and the surrounding environment. Visiting the Science Museum is like embarking on a journey to understand how human actions lead to changes in the environment. An interactive journey with a captivating exhibition that aims to involve the visitor, to make him live unique experiences, thanks to real and virtual sensory stimuli: interactive installations, multimedia exhibits, workshops, activities, exhibitions and events.
MUSE exhibition route
The MUSE exhibition route tells the story of the Earth through the metaphor of the mountain. It starts from the top, from the terrace - which looks out over the Adige Valley - a place for various events and activities. The fourth floor is dedicated to the mountains, with themes such as glaciers, the climate, the organisms that live there, and the first explorations. All through panels, exhibitions, images, videos and stories. A long "Glacial Experience" tunnel offers thrilling adventures: plunging down the walls, the terrible experience of an avalanche, a walk suspended 23 metres above the ground...
The third floor is dedicated to alpine biodiversity, the changing of the seasons, and in the "Explore the forest" gallery, children aged 4 to 9 can learn, touch, smell, play...
The second floor tells the story of the Dolomites, the geology, but also the resources of the subsoil, such as metals and building materials and environmental risks, such as landslides, floods, earthquakes, showing which are the tools for forecasting and preventing such disasters.
In the foreground is the history of mankind. From the first humans in the Alps to the future: a journey through time to learn about the ancestors of the human race. Here you will also find the four research laboratories for the study of fauna, limnology, botany, geology, palaeontology and prehistory. In another room there is an interactive sphere of the earth. And finally the Fab-Lab where visitors can design and 3D print their own technological objects.
On the ground floor, from spring 2014, the Maxi Ooh area will be created, a space for children from 0 to 5 years old where they can experiment with their senses and learn about the environment.
The Hands-on Gallery houses interactive stations dedicated to basic sciences with experiments and concepts in physics, mathematics and natural sciences.
In the basement, the story of life is told: the remains and fossils of extinct animals and the DNA gallery, where we try to answer some important questions: where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?
And finally the tropical greenhouse recreating the rainforest of the Udzungawa Mountains, preceded by large aquariums with fish from Tanzania.
The museum has been awarded the Family in Trentino mark and offers various services for families with children. There is also a library, a bookshop and a cafeteria.
