The Geology Museum in Radein is located just a few kilometres from Bolzano and, thanks to the exhibits on display here, provides comprehensive and detailed information on what the earth was like millions and millions of years ago. The museum exhibits finds from the Bletterbach gorge, one of the most interesting geological sites in Europe, which was designated a World Heritage Site in the Dolomites in 2009.
The Geological Museum is housed in the Peter Rosegger building near the church in Redagno di Sopra. Completely renovated in 2006, it is part of the South Tyrol Garden Museums.
In a visit of about one hour you can learn about the history of the earth, covering a period of 286 to 210 million years ago.
The Geology Museum in Radein is divided into two sections: the first tells the story of the earth's history through the display of exhibits such as plant fossils, petrified salt crystals, raindrop imprints, dinosaur footprints, rock stratifications and numerous molluscs and other fish ancestors that show how in the Permian and Triassic periods Radein, Aldin and the Bletterbach gorge were one vast sea. The second shows a film about the Bletterbach Gorge.
A three-dimensional model gives an idea of what the area looked like millions of years ago.
A visit to the geological museum in Redagno can be combined with a visit to the GEOPARC Bletterbach, the gorge and the visitor centre.
