Trens High Mountain Trail and Pilgrimage Route

Historic walk along the Trens High Mountain Trail (Trenser Höhenweg). Maria Trens is, after Maria Weißenstein, an important place of pilgrimage, visited by many pilgrims. The origin of the pilgrimage is based on a legend, where a farmer found a statue of the Virgin Mary and took it home. The next day, it disappeared and appeared in the village chapel.

Turn-by-turn directions

The route begins in the upper part of the village of Trens (937m) at the Wallfahrtskirche pilgrimage church, as “Trenser Höhenweg“. Trail no. 24 (indications) leads from the settlement in a north-westerly direction, ascending to Gschleng farm (1,098m). Higher up in the forest, you will reach a forest path (1,205m), a high mountain trail with fantastic views. In a rift at the end of the street, follow route no. 24B, which forks left, leading down through the forest to a protruding rock spur with Sprechenstein Castle (1,071m; refreshments served). Here, a path on the south side leads down into the valley to Gasthof Burgfrieden inn (939m). There you follow the old pilgrim’s way, which runs close to Hauptstraße main street, past several inns, and on to Maria Trens.
