Valer Castle

Situated on an ancient Roman road in Tassullo, Castello di Valer is built around the original octagonal tower, which at 40 metres is the highest in Trentino. There are about a hundred rooms inside, some of which are frescoed. Particularly noteworthy are the frescoes in the Chapel by Giovanni Battista Baschenis in 1496. Castel Valer can only be visited from the outside, with a few exceptions.

The origin of the name 'Valer' is said to be linked to St. Valerius, to whom the castle chapel is consecrated. Castel Valer was built in 1211 when it was owned by the Counts of Appiano. It then passed to the Counts of Tyrol and in 1368 to the Sporo family, to whom it still belongs today.

The walls of Valer Castle, whose lines draw a perimeter similar to that of the high granite tower, enclose within them the two main buildings, the older Castel di Sotto and the 16th-century Castel di Sopra, where Gothic and Romanesque architectural elements mingle with 16th-century ones.

Worthy of particular note is the Chapel of San Valerio, entirely frescoed by the Baschenis brothers, painters of Bergamo origin. The beautiful paintings in iridescent colours depict the Saint enthroned with St Sebastian and St Fabian next to him.

Castel Valer is today the private residence of the Spaur counts. It is not possible to visit the interior of the castle on one's own, but only by guided tour.
